National Oyster Day – August 5th

Are you an oyster lover?  Or have you always wanted to tried oysters, but never have had the opportunity?  Well, today is the perfect day to add them to your dinner menu, because it is National Oyster Day!

Here’s a fun fact that you may not have heard before:  oysters take on the characteristics of the body of water in which they live.  This is why oysters vary in both size and flavor, depending on where they come from.  East coast oysters tend to be smaller, milder, and saltier, while west coasters are creamier with a sweet flavor.

Another fun fact:  only one out of every 10,000 oysters will produce a pearl.

If you would like to celebrate this national holiday, here are a couple of restaurants that have excellent reviews and menus offering oysters:

    • Tom’s Oyster Bar – 318 S. Main Street, Royal Oak
    • Mitchell’s Fish Market – locations in Lansing, Livonia, and Rochester Hills
    • Hooters – 3415 S. Miller Rd, Flint
