National Ice Cream Day was instituted by President Ronald Reagan in July of 1984. Reagan chose the third Sunday of July to observe and celebrate the treat that, as he said, 90% of Americans enjoy on a regular basis. He encouraged Americans to celebrate the dessert with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” His proclamation glorified the dairy industry, and Americans today still lead the world when it comes to consuming this frozen delight! In the United States, vanilla is the most popular flavor, making up 29% of sales.
President Reagan wasn’t expecting that National Ice Cream Day would become an annual holiday. The whole month of July is now considered “National Ice Cream Month.” Various ice cream shops have special deals throughout the month. For example, Baskin Robbins is offering a “free scoop” as well as free delivery all month long when you place an order of $15 or more through DoorDash and use promo code “BASKINSCOOP.” Baskin Robbins flavor of the month for July is Surprise Party, which features pink and blue cake batter and yellow buttercream flavors. For National Ice Cream Day 2020, Dippin’ Dots is offering a free give-away on Facebook and Instagram – free ice cream for a year! – so be sure to follow them on social media! Sonic is offering a special this month on their new Lemonberry Slush Float – you can get a medium for just $2.99 through August 2nd.
Be sure to check out your other favorite local ice cream shops to see what deals they are serving up this month! There is no better way to cool down on a 90% day than with some ice cream!
